Choosing the gender
If you are simply seeking a rabbit as a pet, then the animal’s gender will probably not be of great importance. It is sometimes said that does (female rabbits) are gentler than bucks (males), but this is not always the case.
Breeding
It is important to know the sex of your pets if you are housing them in groups to avoid fighting or unwanted young. It will also be important if you are planning to breed them. In this case, it is usually better to keep more females and arrange for these to be mated with other people’s males, as you will then have the resulting babies to choose from. A pair of females will make happy companion.

Sexing Rabbits
It is not always easy to sex young rabbits, but once they are mature at five months old the difference will be more obvious. The gap between the two openings on the underside of the body close to the tail is shorter in does compared with bucks and, by this stage, the scrotal swellings in a male will also be obvious. You should avoid keeping bucks together in a hutch as they are likely to fight and can seriously injure each other with their sharp claws.
